I remember during the 80’s there’s a very popular show on TV called “Ang Bagong Kapeon” (The New Champ) which was hosted by Asia’s Queen of song Pilita Coralles and the late comedian Bert “Tawa” Marcelo. You really couldn’t let this show pass every week especially if you have a bet as to who can beat the reigning champion for so many consecutive weeks. The show format was where the winner of that week will challenge the reining weekly champion. If the winner of that night wins, the new champ who will defend the title for eight consecutive weeks will be the grand champion.

The contestant who joined and won before really had a voice of a true singer unlike those singing in reality contest today. Sometimes they win because of some popularity votes from texting. Their voice is not really good enough and sometimes you can’t really understand if they had side effects of colonoxy the way they sing. In the end where do those winners go? After a year of being a celebrity, what happened to them is that they end up just singing in some fiesta out of town. When can they produce another Regine Velasquez, “Asia’s Song Bird” who was once the first grand winner of “Bagong Kampeon.”
